Jon Gudni Fjoluson signs for Germinal ACeerschot

The Icelandic international Jon Gudni Fjoluson has signed a 3 year contract with the belgian premier league team Beerschot A.C. For the past seasons Jon Gudni has been playing for Fram in the Icelandic Premier League. We wish Jon Gudni good luck in Belgium.

The Icelandic league – Pepsi deildin- has started, earlier in the season than ever before. 20 goals were scored in 6 games. The goalkeeper Ogmundur Kristinsson (Fram) and the defender Skuli Jon Fridgeirsson (KR) were both selected in the team of the week by fotbolti.net.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson (1992) has been loaned for 3 months from Selfoss to AGF in Denmark. Bodvarsson who´s one of the biggest talents in Iceland at the moment was a key player for Selfoss in the Pepsi Deildin but his club got relegated. He´s also a key player for the U19 national team with 9 games and 1 goal up-to-date.

Hjortur Logi Valgardsson signs a 4 year deal with IFK Göteborg

The Icelandic left back, Hjortur Logi Valgardsson, has signed a 4 year deal with the Swedish team IFK Göteborg. Valgardsson has played all his life with his home-club FH Hafnarfjordur in Iceland. He is a regular with the Icelandic U21 team and has played one game with the Icelandic A national team.

We wish him the best of luck in the new club.

The Icelandic forward, Alfred Finnbogason, has joined Sporting Lokeren from Icelandic champions Breidablik.
Finnbogason who was voted Player of the year in Iceland signed a 3,5 year deal with the Belgian club.

Iceland to meet Israel in Israel on the 17th of November

Iceland will face Israel in a friendly match in Israel on next Wednesday. In the squad there are 4 players from Melar Sport:

  • Indriði Sigurðsson (1981) – player with Viking FK. Left back / central defender.
  • Arnór Sveinn Aðalsteinsson (1986) – player with Breidablik. Right/left back.
  • Alfreð Finnbogason (1989) – player with Breidablik. Forward.
  • Jón Guðni Fjóluson (1989) – player with Fram. Central defender.

The game is played at Bloomfield stadium and it starts at 17:35 (Icelandic time).

A historic achievement for the Icelandic U21 team!

Iceland progress to the UEFA European Under-21 Championship finals after a 1-2 win over Scotland. This is a historic achievement since it´s the first time that an Icelandic men´s team qualifies for a final tournament.

The following players from Melar Sport have been selected for the important national games for the Icelandic A-team and U21-team.

A-team EURO 2010 Group stage game: Iceland-Portugal.
Indridi Sigurdsson, Theodor Elmar Bjarnason, Gudjon Baldvinsson and Arnor Sveinn Adalsteinsson.

U-21 play-off games: Iceland-Scotland:
Arnar Darri Petursson, Skuli Jon Fridgeirsson, Hjortur Logi Valgardsson, Jon Gudni Fjoluson, Elfar Freyr Helgason, Almar Ormarsson and Alfred Finnbogason.

Baldur joins the national team for the game against Denmark.

They´ll meet Czech Republic on Tuesday which is a final for which team will qualify for the Finals.

Indridi Sigurdsson had a good game when Iceland lost at home against Norway 1-2 after having played brilliantly in the first half. Arnor Sveinn Adalsteinsson came on as a sub on the 74th minute.

Gardar Johannsson has signed a contract with Strømsgodset (Norway) until the end of the year. Gardar knows Norway well as he was for 3 years with FFK. Godset has been doing well this season, are currently nr. 4 in the league (Tippeligaen) and are in the Semi Final of the Norwegian Cup.

The young goalkeeper Arnar Darri Petursson has joined the danish premier league club SønderjyskE on a two year deal. Arnar Darri has been the number one keeper at Lyn in Norge but the club was recently filed bankrupt. Melar Sport wishes Arnar the best of luck at the new club.

The Icelandic national player, Sturla Asgeirsson, has joined the icelandic club Valur for next season. Sturla coms from the Dusseldorf in Germany where he has been playing for the past two years. Sturla signed a one year contract with the Reykjavik giants. Melar Sport wishes him the best at the new club.

The Icelandic football national team won a convincing 4-0 win over Andorra on Saturday. Melar Sport players Indridi Sigurdsson, Jon Gudni Fjoluson, Skuli Jon Fridgeirsson and Arnor Sveinn Adalsteinsson played in the Icelandic defence and held a clean sheet. Baldur Sigurdsson was on the bench.

Viktor Bjarki Arnarsson has signed a 3 year contract with KR Reykjavik. He joins them as a Bosman player from the Norwegian side, Lillestrom SK.

Viktor Bjarki had been with LSK for the last 3 years, two of them he was loaned out. His first season Viktor was injured and in 2008 he was loaned to KR Reykjavik.

Last season Viktor Bjarki was loaned to Nybergsund in Adecco league where he was a key figure.

Gunnar Magnusson has signed a 3 year contract with the Norwegian team Kristiansund HK. Gunnar has been a coach with HK in Iceland and assistant coach for the Icelandic national team in handball.

Kristiansund HK contacted Melar Sport in late 2009 as they were looking to sign a new head coach. Melar Sport pointed out Gunnar and Kristiansund HK came to Iceland early in 2010.

Today Gardar Johannsson was formally introduced at Hansa Rostock along with his fellow national player, Helgi Valur Danielsson.
His first game will be at home against Union Berlin on the 30th of January.

Gardar who´s last 3 years played with FFK in Norway signed a 1 1/2 year contract or until 30.6.2011.

Successful workshop

The workshop for young athletes that Melar Sport hosted in collaboration with the Open university on January 2-3rd was a success.
It was sold out as 50 participants listened to educational lectures and participated in various assignments over the weekend.
The highlight for many of the participants was when Icelandic elite athletes, Indridi Sigudrsson (football), Ragna Sigurdardottir (badminton), Robert Gunnarsson (handball) and Snorri Steinn Gudjonsson (handball) arrived to answer questions and talk to the young athletes.
Melar Sport and the Open University want to thank everyone that took part in the seminar and wish the young athletes the best of luck in the new year.
